Deciding on an Alarm System

Have you been contemplating installing an alarm system in your home? Many people look to a home security system as the most effective way of protecting their family. While it isn’t the only measure you can take to secure your home, it certainly does help deter an intruder. If the intruder still decides to forcefully enter your home, your system can alert local authorities to come to your aid. Here are some things to think about when deciding which system best suits your needs.

1. First off, you need to decide whether you want to link up to a network that provides constant coverage. This will come at the cost of a monthly fee. If you don’t, your system can simply consist of loud chimes that will go off if an intruder enters, or a series of bright strobe lights that shine brightly to alert both you and your neighbors. Some of the newer units on the market can be programmed with private telephone numbers that will automatically be called in the event of an intrusion. This way, if something happens while you’re gone, you’ll instantly be notified on your cell phone. Likewise, you can set the alarm to immediately notify your local police department should an incident arise.

2. If you do choose to have a system professionally installed by a home security provider, do your research. Companies provide different levels of service for different prices. Make sure that the company you choose also offers fire protection. Essentially, the company acts as a conduit between you and the local police and fire department. It certainly can be reassuring to know that a private service is looking over your shoulder at all times.

3. You’ll also need to decide between infrared sensors and magnetic sensors. Infrared sensors are placed on both sides of a window. When something disrupts the path between the two sensors, the central system is alerted. Magnetic sensors, on the other hand, are secured to both the inner and outer edge of the window. When the two are pushed out of sync (by someone lifting the window), the alarm goes off. The disadvantage of magnetic sensors is that they usually will not trigger a reaction if the window is broken rather than lifted.

4. Do you have kids? If so, you may want to choose a system that has voice deactivation capabilities. Children will often forget the numbers to the system, and police departments charge fees for excessive false alarms.

Alarm systems aren’t the only method of protection you should consider. It’s also important to make sure that your locks are up to date. A heavy deadbolt is essential for making sure that intruders have an extra step to worry about before they gain entry. You should also remember to always take in any newspapers or mail, as that is a definite sign that you haven’t been in your residence for at least a few days. With common sense and the addition of a home security system, your home stands a fair chance of repelling potential intruders.
Author Resource:- It’s always better to be safe than sorry. You will never regret installing a good quality security system in you house or carrying around some pepper spray. You could however regret not doing those things. Have a look at our range for security products here: http://www.yoursecurityshop.com/
