When you decide you want to start homeschooling your children, it can be stressful at first.
Trying to choose your curriculum, buying the books you ll need, creating your lesson plans, and planning time to teach each day is overwhelming. To stay focused, you ll need to remember the reason why you make this decision in the first place. Keep that fresh in your mind to help you get through each day.
When you decide to homeschool, the first thing you need to do is decide which curriculum you are going to go with. Your decision will based on your child’s grade level, and also on what you want your child to learn. Take into account the way your child learns best. Some curriculums are more geared toward the visual learning while others are more appropriate for an audio learner.
You will also need to purchase your school supplies. Look at the enrichment activities, projects, and other things you may do so you can create your supply list and purchase everything you will need. You don’t want to be in the middle of a project and realize you don’t have everything you will need.
Once you receive your supplies, it s time to build your lesson plans. Doing this early will help you down the road. You don’t want to stress because you don’t know what to teach next. Lesson plans can be created all at once before the year starts or on a weekly or monthly basis. You will want to do what works best for you. Make sure you stick to it and budget your time in if you decide to do weekly or monthly plans. You will also need
to decide what time will be set aside for school. Will you go the traditional time and go from 9 – 3 or will you have school earlier or later in the day? You will need to consider your children and see what fits them best.
While you are working on your lesson plans and your school time, remember to plan some outings too. You may need to take your children to a different location for physical education classes. You also may need to go on field trips to cover topics in Science or Math. Plan ahead if you need to make reservations or notify someone of your plans.
If this is your first time homeschooling, you might consider hiring a homeschool coach. Your coach will be able to help you through the rough times and they may also be able to help you when you run into struggles with grades or testing. It’s always nice to have someone that knows what you are going through and someone that is willing to listen and give good advice.
