Sketch your ideal pool deck. Consider the materials to be used, the size and purpose of the pool. Consider the furniture to be accessorized near the pool.

All existing swimming pools are built with decks as an integral part. It was traditionally three foot wide collar of concrete encompassing the pool. If the pool is constructed with a spring board for diving in a deep end, a seven foot wide concrete at that end can hold the board.

The primary purpose of pool decks is to keep tidy the area around the pool and minimize slipping. Now pool decks are not just purely functional but beatifying as well. Swimming pools are more inviting with decorative decks. Pool decks now also serve as passages connecting to a house. Some decks are designed to serve as a large playing area surrounding the pool.

The design and evolution of the pool deck has dramatically improved over the years making every aspect of the deck as significant as the pool itself. Designing in ground decks are more versatile than its above ground deck counterpart. An in ground deck is the best choice if there’s a large space available. Above ground pool decks are often made of wood and usually built on stilts.

In ground Pool Decks
One of the latest and biggest trends in design is a concrete pool deck. A well planned pool deck can offer more than just providing a safe and slip resistant deck where anybody can enjoy the sun and grill. In ground pool deck is now given as much consideration as the interior of the home.

Decorative concretes make possible pool decks that match the exterior of the house, blending nicely with the surroundings. It makes it cheaper now to duplicatd the traditionally expensive and exotic wood, stone and slate designs.

Concrete decks are more popular now because of very strong surfaces compared to wooden or stone pool decks. Thanks to advanced techniques in stamping, it is significantly inexpensive now to opt for concrete designs.

Above the Ground Pool Decks
Above ground pools are cheaper, simpler and quicker to install. Maintenance is minimal. Decks of these pools should be sturdy, stable considering the elevation. It must provide easy access to those who want to swim. Design decks that blend with the landscape, the sun exposure and slopes.

Fundamentals of Pool Deck Construction:
• Follow the same principle in constructing a high quality slab on grade.
• Backfill the area near the pool’s bond beams.
• Compact the sub grade.
• Use a low water to cement ratio.
• Use fibers for secondary reinforcement.
• Decide actively where control joints be placed.
• Cure concrete slabs properly.

Although concrete is more popular now, high quality wood is the top choice in designing long lasting decks. This natural material is pleasant to the eyes, stable, lasting and easy to handle. The only disadvantage with wood is that it is prone to damage with constant exposure to water.

Wood Types for Pool Deck Construction:
Cedar wood is popularly used for pool deck building. Cedar looks and smells good, and highly durable. Its grain or texture is soft, intricate and beautiful. Cedar has natural tannins that make it insect resistant.

Redwood is another choice good material. It is reddish and largely similar to cedar.

Pine wood is treated with chemicals to withstand rotting and fight off insects. They became popular because they are more cost efficient compared to cedar or redwood. Cedar and redwood however need not be chemically treated as they possess natural protections already.

Pressure treated woods are vulnerable to discoloration and splitting that may need regular maintenance.
